For God's pleasure everything was and is created.

"...it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast."
"Whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
Have you ever noticed that it seems as if these two verses contradict one another? At first you might think, "Calling on the name of the Lord is DOING something; isn't it? Wouldn't that be considered works?" Not if we look at them from God's perspecive...
If you call on the name of the Lord, does the act of asking God to save you actually save you? No. But you do get saved right? Yes. How does that work?? Ok, you gotta think deep with me here. When you call on the Lord to save you, you are ASKING Him to save you. Therefore, it is completely up to Him to do the saving. You simply approach the throne of Grace and ask for Jesus Christ's payment to cover your sins also. That, in itself, does not save you. Henceforth, it is NOT by works. (I just wanted to use the word "Henceforth.") What DOES save you is the fact that GOD recognizes you and gives you His grace.
We have no right to boast about our salvation. God saves us. Therefore, we shift the focus off of ourselves by PRAISING HIM.
An interesting thing to note that you might have noticed: "Whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved" is a promise. That is why it is so easy to think of a prayer we say as being the works by which we are saved; but that is not true. God promises that He will save us if we ask Him, but He still does the work and gets the glory. If you want to think of it this way, God WANTS us to take advantage of His promise!

I think mostly what it means by 'works' is the whole "if you behave on earth you get to go to heaven" ordeal...
I'm having a test over the middle ages/age of enlightenment and it talked about people starting to change their point of view on things.... John Calvin realized that it was Justification By Faith that got you into heaven... Not how big of a calf you sacrificed "in the name of God".
Oh yeah... he also took a stab at the sale of indulgences... If anyone doesn't know what that is then i'll let you in.. If you had a loved one die and you're not sure if they went to heaven or hell, or maybe they went to purgatory (believed to be the place between heaven and hell... which i think is nonexistent)... then you could pay money to the church to have their sins removed and they could get into heaven... you could also pay money to the church to have the punishment of your own sins to be lessened when you get to 'the pearly gates'...
John Calvin's the man!! He broke away from the tradition and showed everyone what was really going on.
Justification by Faith is related to the verse about "calling to God"
The Sale of Indulgences is an example of "good works".... which, I might add, gets you nowhere..

...what could keep me up until all hours of the night? A refreshing look at the faith I had when I was saved. Even with all the encouragement I get, I am humbled when compared to God's most dedicated disciples.
Consider these verses before and after you watch this video. Make sure you're in a situation where you can let the tears flow. This seems like foolishness to the world...
"But Jesus said, 'Let the children alone, and do not hinder them from coming to Me; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.'" Matthew 19:14
"Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all." Mark 10:15

In reading Chris Tomlin's book "The Way I Was Made," he makes the comment that after reading passages such as Isaiah 6 and Revelation 4, he came to the conclusion that he must reserve the word "awesome" for God alone.
Those chapters are amazing...Isaiah 6 is Isaiah's cleansing and call, and he sees the Lord high and lifted up. His only choice was to fall protrate and confess his sin.
Revelation 4-5 on the other hand, might be my favorite passages in Scripture. Revelation 4 depicts the awesomeness of God's throne and the worship that surrounds it. Revelation 5 then depicts the Lamb's worthiness to open the scroll.
Some of the most awesome (there's that word again) verses in the whole Bible:
9 And they sang a new song: "You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. 10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth." (Revelation 5:9-10)

Man, that video never gets old. I'm challenged everytime I watch it...
Oh, here's something I found about it...
From: cvillongco Sent: 2006-08-30 10:55:56 Subject: Hi.
This is in reference to your video about "when children pray" God bless! -Celine
I type this not argumentatively, but to stand as a witness. This is truly a moving clip. More so for me than you would think. Let me explain. The first voice of a crying child that you hear, wailing, begging Christ to turn our country and give us more of Him is my voice. This happened one night after a children's service at our church. I want you all to know that as a young child I was taught these things yes, but nothing on this video was in anyway manufactured, nor were they empty words mindlessly echoed by children.
This was not something pre-meditated or taught, this was God and God alone. I urge you all watching this video to not focus on the little nit-picky aspects of who created it, what the people in it might think, or anything else that would distract you from seeing the true vision for this video, that God is moving and he doesn't care about your age. He is searching the globe for people to pray His will and seek His face.

IRAQ
Assyrian Christian Boy Beheaded – Assyrian International News Agency (AINA)
The AINA has reported that a 14-year-old Assyrian boy, Ayad Tariq, was beheaded by Muslim militants in Baqouba, Iraq, on October 21. Ayad was beginning his shift of maintaining an electrical generator when a group of disguised Muslim militants approached him and asked to see his identification. When the Muslims saw his identification and noted he was a "Christian," they (called him) a "dirty Christian sinner!" They then threw him to the ground, held down his arms and legs, shouting "Allah Akbar!" (God is great), and beheaded him. Pray God will comfort Ayad's family and friends, giving them the supernatural gift of peace that comes from forgiving our enemies. Matthew 18:21, 22
Man, this makes me sick to my stomach to even think of that happening...and it's not like hollywood! You can't behead someone with one quick swipe of a small sword or knife (which is what they probably had)...
So I've got some questions for you: Is your faith worth it? How big is your God that you would be willing to give up everything? Or is God big enough in your life for you to do that?
If God isn't big enough, then you have no reason to worship Him. Maybe that's why worship is boring. If God isn't big enough, then you have no reason to tell others about him. Maybe that's why witnessing is so hard. If God isn't big enough, then you have no chance to see His glory. Maybe that's why you think Christianity is unsatisfying.
To some people, God is so big that they will face torture and death for His sake. How much do you desire for Him to become big in your life?
